THE POTBELLIED PIGS RFC “FATBOY TENS” PHILLIPINES

About the Pot Bellies.

The Pot Bellied Pigs are basically a touring team with the odd home game in Hong Kong, some being very odd. We draw players from all the Hong Kong clubs plus from far and wide across Asia and elsewhere. Our roots are in Hong Kong but as people leave and move on our net increases. In fact the right honorable Jeff Probyn of England and Lions fame is our honorary president having played for us on occasions, as has Bentos, Mr John Bentley.
We were formed in 1997 and have done 35 tours since then. There are a lot of 10’s tournaments across Asia with a range of teams from pretty social to quite serious. This year alone we have played in the Manila 10’s, Jakarta 10’s and Phuket 10’s. For the rest of the year we will probably do a Phnom Penh tournament, either Labuan or Bali and are planning a trip to Hawaii for the Hawaii Harlequins 15’s tournament in October. On the serious side we were in Bali when the bombing occurred and lost some members touring with other teams.
The Fat Boys 10’s we are organizing will be our first tournament of our own. It will be in Angeles City, Philippines, a couple of hours north of Manila. It is the site of the Clark Airbase built by the US military when they had a large contingent in the Philippines in the 70’s. After the US left the bars and nightlife area left behind has developed into a tourist nightlife area.
We have arranged so far to use a stadium on the base, now run by the Philippines air force and are being sponsored by some of the local bars. As most flights come into Manila we will have to bus people up to Angeles. Sponsorship from the bars means they will provide a bus, chuck on a load of beers , and we will hit the road. Not the worst way to travel I can assure you. Similarly they will provide cheerleaders on the day and specials in the bar.
We are hoping to raise some money for a local orphanage and also the Philippines Rugby Union Development Fund and will be having a charity dinner and auction on the Saturday night. This will probably be MC’d by Justin Sampson who does the rugby comments on Start Sports here in Asia. We are also trying to finales a guest speaker at the moment.
If you or any of your boys are out this way or want a run, we always welcome everyone who loves rugby.
